چکیده

1. An intestinal perfusion technique has been used to study absorption in uivo of L-cystine and L-cysteine in six normal human subjects and three patients with homozygous cystinuria. 2. No significant absorption of L-cystine was detected during perfusion of the cystinuric patients, whereas L-cysteine absorption was normal. These results imply that L-cystine and L-cysteine are normally absorbed by different transport processes. 3. No significant reduction of L-cystine to L-cysteine occurred in the gut lumen during the perfusion experiments. No more oxidation of L-cysteine to L-cystine occurred in the gut lumen during the perfusion experiments than in the test solutions which were simultaneously incubated in uitro.

Cystinuria: Defective Intestinal Transport of Dibasic Amino Acids and Cystine.

The clinical manifestations of cystinuria are localized to the urinary tract and result from the formation of cystine calculi. The findings of increased excretion of cystine, lysine, arginine, and ornithine in the urine at a time when the plasma levels of these amino acids were normal or low suggested to Dent and Rose (2) that a renal tu-1)ular reabsorptive site, shared by the involved amino ac...

Intestinal transport of cystine and cysteine in man: evidence for separate mechanisms.

Cystine and cysteine are transported by energy-dependent, mediated processes in human gut. When either of these amino acids is transported, only cysteine is recovered intracellularly, indicating that cystine is reduced to cysteine after achieving an intracellular location. In contrast to results with cystine, cysteine uptake is not defective in gut from cystinuric patients, nor do lysine and ar...

Disturbances of cystine metabolism in liver disease.

The urinary excretion of cystine, as determined on the polarograph, varies, in normal adults, between 40 and 80 mg. daily (1). It may be increased either as a result of a low renal threshold for cystine or a raised plasma cystine concentration. Cystinuria due to a low renal threshold occurs in 'classical cystinuria,' the Fanconi syndrome and hepatolenticular degeneration (2). In such conditions...

The urinary sulfur partition in normal and cystinuric dogs fed labeled methionine.

In 1935 Brand and coworkers (1) discovered a cystinuric Irish terrier. Since that time several other cystinuric dogs, including two Scotch terriers (2), have been either discovered or bred from the original stock. It might have been supposed that with this stimulus the problem of cystinuria would have been clarified. Such is apparently not the case. Brand and coworkers (3) have investigated var...

Inulin and Endogenous Amino Acid Renal Clearances

Cystinuria is manifested by cystine calculi and high urinary excretion of cystine (2), lysine, arginine (3), and ornithine (4). Abnormally low plasma levels have been established for cystine (5, 6), lysine (7), arginine, and ornithine (5, 8). Several investigators have previously demonstrated increased renal clearances for cystine, lysine, arginine, and ornithine (7-11). These four amino acids ...
